This quarter at GPCPC, our social media theme was Medications in Pregnancy and Breastfeeding.
The first post rounded up findings from current research and highlighted evidence gaps, emerging areas and opportunities for future research.
The second post coincided with World Breastfeeding Week. It highlighted how many medications are compatible with breastfeeding, yet uncertainty can sometimes lead to delayed treatment or advice to stop breastfeeding unnecessarily. Access to reliable prescribing resources and up-to-date knowledge can help us support both maternal health and infant feeding goals. Awareness and signposting to local resources services (for example infant feeding specialist, health visitor, peer support network) can provide families with the support they need at the right time.

The fourth post was focussed on prescribing in pregnancy, specifically for nausea and vomiting, highlighting the considerable variation in GP confidence when it comes to prescribing antiemetics during pregnancy and options available as per latest guidance.
The fifth and sixth posts of the quarter were a collaboration with Medics’ Lactation Community (MiLC), a registered UK charity, providing breastfeeding peer support and education, who kindly produced relevant material for our audience. The priority areas were sexual health and mental health in postpartum care.
